The mind's unlimited capabilities

BY CLAUDIA BLAXELL

ALFRED Bellanti is a rigidly trained clinical hypnotherapist who has been successful in private practice for many years. "Never underestimate the capabilities of your own mind," he said, gazing firmly at me over the top of his glasses. "You'd be surprised at the harm people can do to themselves physically, spiritually and emotionally through misconception, delusion and lack of knowing."

Taking the opportunity to perhaps gain some insight into the workings of my own mind, I probed him for further details. "It's very basic really," he continued, "we are born with a little inherited knowledge and then we immediately become moulded by environmental forces: parents, school, friends, the media and so on. This knowledge and conditioning forms the basis for all our thoughts, behaviours and actions. Now, enlightened parents and teachers, it's more than likely that everything we think, say or do comes from a very limited foundation.

"Above all, what we accept as real is only a tiny aspect of the total picture. Those of us who have had more education may be a little better off, but think of your brain as the hardware. This hardware started developing at conception and was built through the years of the inputs I mentioned before. If the hardware is limited, no matter how sophisticated the software it operates is, the results will be limited and at worst, faulty," he explained.

Just as I began to resign myself to 'faulty goods' status, Alfred offered a glimmer of hope. "This is where hypnotherapy comes in," he enthused. "The therapist helps the client to develop a state of deep relaxation. It's a state of mind between waking and sleeping where the client is conscious and aware of physical sensations and surroundings, yet more receptive to therapeutic suggestions than he or she would normally be. A whole range of problems and conditions can be explored, treated and overcome through hypnotherapy. Not only emotional and psychological problems, but things like warts and psoriasis. I've seen documented evidence of patients undergoing major surgery using hypnoanaesthesia in place of chemical anaesthetic." This all made so much sense to me.

Intrigued, I asked Alfred about the self hypnosis tapes he has developed. "The tapes are the result of years of professional practice;" he said. "I was able to take the best and most successful aspects from my experience and combine them into self hypnosis programs from which people can obtain great benefits. The tapes have been designed to improve a person's outlook by encouraging deep self-exploration. Hopefully many people will discover their true paths by using them. I am currently working on another program that is designed to help people work through emotional issues and release unwanted patterns and habits--excess baggage."
